Breast Reconstruction: What to Expect

Breast reconstruction rebuilds breast shape after a mastectomy or other breast surgery. The decision is personal. Some people choose reconstruction; others choose to remain flat or use an external prosthesis. An early conversation can explain options without committing you to an operation.

Implants and your own tissue are different options

Reconstruction may use an implant, tissue from another part of the body, or a combination. Some plans involve a tissue expander and later surgery. Tissue-based reconstruction adds a donor area with its own scar and recovery needs. The ASPS breast reconstruction guide explains the main approaches.

Timing depends on the cancer treatment plan

Reconstruction can begin at the time of mastectomy or at a later date. Radiation, chemotherapy, health, anatomy, and personal priorities can affect the sequence. Coordinate decisions with the breast surgeon, oncology team, and reconstructive surgeon. A technique that fits one patient may not fit another.

Expect a process, not necessarily one operation

Reconstruction may involve several stages, including adjustments to shape or symmetry. The reconstructed breast may have different sensation and appearance from the original breast. Discuss scars, donor-site effects, implant risks when applicable, and what further procedures may be considered.

Prepare for home support and follow-up

Ask about drains, incision care, movement limits, time away from work, and help with lifting. The plan differs between implant and tissue-based procedures. Before discharge, know which symptoms need a call and how to contact the operating team.
