Mommy Makeover Consultation Checklist

Before getting a mommy makeover, make sure you understand what you want to change, which procedures address those concerns, and what the complete recovery will ask of you. The procedure list should come after those decisions, not before them.

Use this guide to prepare for a mommy makeover consultation in Bend, Oregon. Bring your priorities, your health history, and the practical details of your life. You do not need to arrive with a finished surgical plan.

Define what you want to change

After pregnancy, one person may notice less breast fullness while another sees a lower breast position. The abdomen may show skin laxity, a changed contour, or a focused area that feels out of proportion. Begin with what you see and how you want to feel after recovery.

Consider these prompts:

  • Do you want to restore breast fullness, change breast position, or reduce breast size?
  • Is loose abdominal skin part of the concern?
  • Does the abdominal contour still feel changed despite stable habits?
  • Is a selected area of localized fat out of proportion with the rest of your body?
  • Which one change would make the greatest difference to you?

Clear priorities help Dr. Borsting evaluate each area and explain what surgery can and cannot change.

Understand what each procedure does

Match each concern to the operation designed to address it. Augmentation focuses on breast volume. A lift focuses on position and shape. Reduction lowers breast volume while reshaping the breast. For the abdomen, compare what a tummy tuck can change with the focused contouring role of liposuction.

These procedures are not interchangeable. Ask which option addresses each concern and whether one focused procedure could achieve your main goal.

Bring future plans into the timing decision

Future pregnancy or major weight change can alter the breasts, skin, abdominal wall, and body contours again. Breast changes after pregnancy or breastfeeding should also have time to settle before a surgical plan is finalized.

Tell Dr. Borsting about plans for another pregnancy, current breastfeeding, recent weight change, and the timing you have in mind. A good plan should support the result you want without forcing the date.

Share your complete health history

Your health, medications, supplements, prior operations, healing history, and nicotine use can change the recommendation. Bring an accurate list and explain any previous anesthesia or recovery concerns.

Ask what needs to happen before surgery and which instructions apply to your procedure combination. Do not change a prescription, supplement, or nicotine plan without guidance from the clinicians involved in your care.

Compare combined and staged surgery

Some procedures may be considered together. Others may be better separated. The choice depends on your health, the total surgical demand, the procedure mix, and the recovery support available to you.

Ask why a combined or staged plan is being recommended. You should understand what each approach means for the operation, scars, activity limits, help at home, and follow-up.

Understand the complete risk

A combined mommy makeover is major surgery. The risks depend on the procedures, your health, and whether operations are combined. They can include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, delayed wound healing, permanent scars, changes in sensation, asymmetry, blood clots, heart or lung complications, anesthesia complications, and the need for another operation.

Ask how the proposed combination affects operative time, recovery, and your personal risks. Before surgery, know which symptoms require a prompt call to the practice, which require emergency care, and how to reach the surgical team after hours.

See the proposed scars before you decide

Every surgical incision creates a permanent scar. The location and length depend on the procedures, anatomy, and amount of reshaping required. Ask Dr. Borsting to show you the proposed pattern and explain the purpose of each incision.

Also discuss how prior scars, clothing preferences, and possible changes in sensation affect your decision. Read more about planning for mommy makeover scars.

Build recovery around your responsibilities

There is no single mommy makeover recovery. The selected operations shape your symptoms, garments, incision care, activity limits, appointments, and need for help.

Plan for childcare, lifting, transportation, work, pets, meals, errands, exercise, and travel. Ask when each responsibility may resume for your exact plan. If drains may be used, include drain care and removal visits in the discussion.

Ask for the complete cost

Cost depends on the procedures selected, operative time, anesthesia, facility fees, implants when used, medical testing, prescriptions, and postoperative garments. Ask for a personal written quote after the examination and surgical plan.

Confirm what the quote includes and what may sit outside it. This lets you compare complete plans instead of comparing one partial fee with another.

Verify the surgeon and the setting

Confirm certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Ask where surgery will take place, what type of anesthesia may be used, who will provide it, and how follow-up concerns are handled.

Emily A. Borsting, MD is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and completed a six-year integrated plastic surgery residency at the University of California, Irvine.

Questions to bring to the consultation

  • Which procedure addresses each change I want?
  • Which priority should shape the plan first?
  • Would one operation or more than one stage fit me better?
  • Would another pregnancy or a large weight change alter this plan?
  • Which incisions are proposed, and how could sensation be affected?
  • What help and activity limits should I arrange?
  • What risks matter most for my health and procedure mix?
  • What is included in the written cost estimate?

Leave with a plan you understand

You should leave the consultation knowing which procedures are proposed, why they fit, what they can change, and what recovery will require. You should also have the space to decide without pressure.
